South Carolina Man Sentenced to 144 Months in Prison for Bank Robbery

CHARLESTON, WV—Samuel Glenn Garwood, 49, of South Carolina, was sentenced today to 144 months in prison by United States District Judge Thomas E. Johnston for bank robbery. Garwood previously pleaded guilty in October. Garwood admitted that he committed bank robberies at the Pioneer Federal Credit Union in South Charleston, West Virginia and the Federal Credit Union in Barboursville, West Virginia. The defendant further admitted that prior to the West Virginia bank robberies, he committed two additional robberies at banks in South Carolina.
At sentencing, Judge Johnston remarked that the defendant was a “serial bank robber” and also stated that the defendant’s conduct caused terrible psychological effects to the teller-victims. The court also ordered the defendant to pay $8,671 in restitution to the four victims.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) conducted the investigation. Assistant United States Attorney Steven I. Loew handled the prosecution.
