Washington Man Pleads Guilty in Crack Cocaine Distribution Scheme

U.S. Attorney’s Office July 01, 2010
  • Western District of Pennsylvania

Acting United States Attorney Robert S. Cessar announced today, July 1, 2010, that Bradley Matthews, a resident of Washington, Pennsylvania, has pleaded guilty in federal court to charges of violating federal narcotics laws.

Matthews, age 35, pleaded guilty to one count before United States District Judge Donetta Ambrose.

In connection with the guilty plea, Assistant United States Attorney Charles A. Eberle advised the court that from on or about August 13, 2007, and continuing until August 14, 2007, Matthews conspired with Patricia Barnes and others to possess with intent to distribute and distribute five grams or more of crack cocaine.

According to Eberle, the charges stemmed from a search of the residence from which Pennsylvania State Police Troopers seized approximately 46 grams of crack cocaine and more than $17,000 in cash. The kitchen in this residence was utilized to cook, process, and package crack cocaine. In the kitchen, officers found multiple scales, cutting agents, packaging materials, paraphernalia for cooking powder cocaine into crack, and quantities of powder cocaine and crack cocaine.

Judge Ambrose scheduled sentencing for November 1, 2010, at 9:30 a.m. The law provides for a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison, a fine of $2,000,000, or both. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed is based upon the seriousness of the offense and the criminal history, if any, of the defendant.

The Pennsylvania State Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted the investigation that led to the prosecution of Matthews and Barnes.
