North Side Man Sentenced to 90 Months in Prison for Bank Robberies

Acting United States Attorney Robert S. Cessar announced today, January 14, 2010, that on January 13, 2010, Leonard Carl Smith, Jr., a resident of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was sentenced in federal court in Pittsburgh to 90 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release on his conviction for two bank robberies. Additionally, Smith was ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $846.00 to First Commonwealth Bank.

Senior United States District Judge Alan N. Bloch imposed the sentence on Smith, age 30.

According to information presented to the court by Assistant United States Attorney Almon S. Burke, Jr., on January 27, 2009, Smith robbed the First Commonwealth Bank located at 441 Smithfield Street in Pittsburgh of $846.00 in U.S. currency. On February 2, 2009, Smith, Jr., robbed the Parkvale Bank located at 1970 Greentree Road in Pittsburgh of $787.00 in U.S. currency. Smith was apprehended immediately after the robbery of the Parkvale Bank, which resulted in the recovery of the $787.00. Smith later confessed to the robbery of both the First Commonwealth Bank as well as the Parkvale Bank.

Mr. Cessar commended the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the City of Pittsburgh Police, and the Scott Township Police for the investigation leading to the successful prosecution of Leonard Carl Smith, Jr.
