Assistant Attorney General for Arizona John Evans Joins United States Attorney’s Office as Southwest Border Counsel

PHOENIX—U.S. Attorney Dennis K. Burke announced today the appointment of John Evans to serve as senior advisor to the U.S. Attorney. Evans has served as the chief of the Criminal Trials Unit for the Arizona Attorney General in Tucson for the past 15 years. He has litigated criminal and civil cases in Arizona for over 30 years.

“John Evans has had a distinguished career as a prosecutor and as a key member of the law enforcement community,” said U.S. Attorney Dennis K. Burke. “He brings a wealth of legal and trial experience to the office and he will play a critical role in Southwest border issues and strategies. I look forward to working with him to address the border problems and their complexities.”

Evans, a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Arizona Prosecuting Attorney’s Advisory Council, now serves as the Chairman of the Arizona Bar Association Criminal Rules Committee, is a member of the Senior Advisory Committee of the Junior League in Tucson, the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force, the United Way Senior Impact Committee, and the Pima County Commission on Trial Court Appointments. He also is involved in litigation of elderly abuse and serves as a chairperson for the Arizona Elder Abuse Coalition and Stop Abuse and Financial Exploitation of the Elderly (S.A.F.E.E.).

Evans will work closely with U.S. Attorney, Dennis K. Burke, and will advise him on a variety issues, including crimes occurring on Arizona’s border with Mexico such as alien smuggling and drugrelated crime, violent crime, financial and fraud crimes, weapons offenses, civil rights, and public corruption.
