PHOENIX—A Federal Law Enforcement Memorial Service was held today to honor those who have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the U.S. Marshals Service. The Drug Enforcement Administration joined the Federal Bureau of Investigation in 2000 in honoring their fallen heroes. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives joined in 2003, and then the U.S. Marshals Service in 2004. A wreath was presented to honor state and local police officers killed in the line of duty in the state of Arizona during the past year.

The men and women honored today are a part of the law enforcement family who has gone before us. We celebrate their sense of duty, for it is the foundation in which they served as law enforcement officers. It is their service to this great nation that we recognize as being distinguished and honorable.

Engraved on the wall of the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington D.C., are these words which were spoken by survivor Vivian E. Cross: “It is not how these officers died that made them heroes...it is how they lived.”

To the brave men and women who have given their lives, so we may prosper, we say thank you. We celebrate their duty and honor their service, for they are the true heroes.
