Serial Bank Robber Arrested

PHOENIX, AZ—Phoenix FBI Special Agent in Charge (SAC) Nathan Thomas Gray and Chandler Police Chief Sherry Kiyler announced today the arrest of Jorge Gutierrez, age 30.

On Tuesday, March 24, 2009, a Hispanic male entered the Desert Schools Federal Credit Union located inside the Wal-Mart located at 1175 S. Arizona Avenue in Chandler, Arizona. The suspect presented a demand note stating he had a gun and verbally demanded money. The victim teller provided the suspect with U.S. currency. The suspect fled the area on foot.

Patrol officers from the Chandler Police Department responding to the call contacted a subject matching the physical description given by the bank employees of the March 24, 2009, robbery. A positive identification was provided by the victim teller identifying the subject who committed the robbery.

The subject, identified as Jorge Gutierrez was transported to the Chandler Police Department headquarters, and interviewed. During the interview, Jorge Gutierrez, admitted to committing six bank robberies. Jorge Gutierrez was shown still photographs of the robberies, and admitted to being the subject in the photographs. Jorge Gutierrez admitted to committing the bank robberies for monetary gain.

SAC Gray stated, “The FBI commends the Chandler Police Department for its effective response to the robbery and taking the subject into custody without incident”.

Jorge Gutierrez admitted to committing the following listed bank robberies:

• 10/30/08, Desert Schools Federal Credit Union, 1380 West Elliot Drive, Tempe.
• 12/13/08, Desert Schools Federal Credit Union, 1380 West Elliot Drive, Tempe.
• 01/12/09, Desert Schools Federal Credit Union, 4940 East Ray Road, Phoenix.
• 02/20/09, Bank of America, 5065 East Elliot Drive, Phoenix.
• 02/24/09, Desert Schools Federal Credit Union, 4940 East Ray Road, Phoenix.
• 03/24/09, Desert Schools Federal Credit Union, 1175 South Arizona Avenue, Chandler.
