Man Responsible for 12 Bank Robberies in Three States Federally Sentenced

Dennis Pfannenschmidt, United States Attorney for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, announced today that Joseph Goetz, age 49, of York County, Pennsylvania, was sentenced Friday for robbing 12 banks in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia. United States District Court Judge Christopher C. Conner sentenced Goetz to a 108-month term of imprisonment and two years’ supervised release. Judge Conner also ordered Goetz to pay restitution.

According to U.S. Attorney Pfannenschmidt, in September 2009, Goetz was charged in a superseding information with seven counts of bank robbery. He pleaded guilty in October 2009, to robbing the banks listed below with a loss totaling $280,274.

  • Drover’s Bank, York, Pennsylvania;
  • Bank of America, Severna Park, Maryland;
  • M&T Bank, Parkton, Maryland;
  • First Mariner Bank, Shewsbury, Pennsylvania;
  • Peoples Bank, York, Pennsylvania;
  • Bank of America, Bel Air, Maryland; and
  • Susquehanna Bank, York, Pennsylvania

Goetz was also responsible for robbing five other banks, listed below, but could not be charged due to the passing of the statute of limitations.

  • AllFirst Bank, York, Pennsylvania;
  • Drovers Bank, Shrewsbury, Pennsylvania;
  • Farmers Bank of MD, Arnold, Maryland;
  • Bank of America, Richmond, Virginia; and
  • Bank of America, Bel Air, Maryland

This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation; Springettsbury Township Police Department; Anne Arundel County Police Department; Fredricksburg Virginia Police Department; Bel Air Police Department; Baltimore County Police Department; York Area Southern Regional Police Department; and Harford County Sheriff Department and prosecuted by the Assistant United States Attorney Daryl F. Bloom.
