Two Charged in Robbery Conspiracy

A six-count superseding indictment1 was filed today charging Michael Matthews and Michael Anderson with conspiracy to commit robbery, which interfered with interstate commerce, two counts of attempted robbery, which interfered with interstate commerce, carrying a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence, and two counts of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The offenses involve the attempted robbery on June 6, 2009, and June 12, 2009, of the Express Check Cashing, located at 5300 Tabor Avenue in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

If convicted, defendant Matthews faces a maximum sentence of life imprisonment, a mandatory minimum sentence of five years’ imprisonment, five years’ supervised release, a $1,250,000 fine, and a $500 special assessment. If convicted, defendant Anderson faces a maximum sentence of life imprisonment, a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years’ imprisonment, five years’ supervised release, a $1,250,000 fine, and a $500 special assessment.
This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Philadelphia Police Department. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Denise S. Wolf.
