Two federal anti-gang centers with a joint mission are now under one roof, thanks to a new state-of-the-art facility opened recently outside the nation's capital and run by the FBI. The result will be improved information sharing, greater coordination and collaboration, and ultimately more success in protecting communities from national and international gangs. The facility houses the National Gang Intelligence Center (NGIC) and the National Gang Targeting, Enforcement, and Coordination Center (GangTECC), bringing together some 50 agents, intelligence analysts, support professionals, and prosecutors. Also represented at the center is the Department of Justice Gang Squad, which includes attorneys who assist both the NGIC and GangTECC. "The work being done here—collection of intelligence and the integration of resources—will have an impact not just on individual investigations and prosecutions, but on also our fundamental understanding and approach to the gang problem for a generation," said Attorney General Michael Mukasey at an open house on Wednesday. The FBI-led National Gang Intelligence Center supports all of law enforcement by synthesizing and sharing intelligence and information on the nation's most deadly gangs, providing finished intelligence assessments and bulletins, analysis of special events, and a range of other information such as timelines, charts, and maps. Ten federal agencies, including the FBI, provide representatives to the center. The National Gang Targeting, Enforcement, and Coordination Center uses the intelligence provided by NGIC to strengthen anti-gang investigations and efforts for maximum national impact.
