The stands were packed, the crowd was cheering, and federal agents were everywhere. No, it wasn't the recent Presidential Inauguration. It was the annual friendly but hard fought hockey game between the U.S. Secret Service and the FBI.
For agents and professional staff both on the ice and in the stands, Saturday's game was not just a chance to cement growing partnerships and to unwind from a busy few weeks of working shoulder-to-shoulder to provide security for the inauguration. It was also an opportunity to support a worthy cause: to raise money for the family of fallen FBI Agent Sam Hicks. With several members of the agent’s family watching from the stands, FBI Director Robert Mueller skated onto the ice sporting Hicks name on the back of his jersey. Secret Service Director Mark Sullivan also joined his team in warm ups. The sell-out, standing-room-only event ended up raising more than $9,000 for the family.
The game—held at Kettler Capitals Iceplex in Arlington, Virginia, the practice rink of the Washington Capitals—was actually the 13th charity tournament between the two agencies. The Bureau team, sponsored by the FBI Agents Association, was made up of agents and support professionals from our Washington Field Office and FBI Headquarters. And oh, how’d the game turn out? It was a thrilling match, with the FBI coming out on top in overtime, 5-4. |
