Winnebago Resident Sentenced to Two Years for Sexual Abuse of a Minor

U.S. Attorney’s Office February 09, 2010
  • District of Nebraska (402) 661-3700

United States Attorney Deborah Gilg, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Indian Affairs announce the following information for the attention of the media:

Event Triggering this Release:

United States District Court Judge Laurie Smith Camp sentenced Ma-Na-Pe-Xoo-Nu-Ga Cleveland to two years’ imprisonment and three years of supervised release for his conviction for sexual abuse of a minor. The investigation of Cleveland began when the mother of a 13-year-old girl saw inappropriate text messages from Cleveland on her daughter’s phone. The FBI and the BIA were called in to investigate.

Cleveland was employed by the Whirling Thunder Wellness Center in Winnebago, Nebraska, and served as the basketball coach to a team of teenaged girls. During his time as coach, he befriended a 13-year-old player on his team and began giving her rides in his car. The relationship grew to the point where the two exchanged thousands of text messages over a three month period. Eventually the two had consensual sex in Cleveland’s car and in his office. During his change of plea hearing, Cleveland admitted he had sex with the 13-year-old player.
