Omaha Citizens Academy

The Omaha Division has been hosting FBI Citizens Academy classes since 2005. Five classes have graduated in the Omaha Field Office and two have graduated in Des Moines, Iowa. The academy provides community leaders with an inside look at the FBI, fosters greater understanding of our role in the community, and builds relationships and develops partnerships that help reduce crime in the communities we serve. Besides learning about the FBI’s structure and operations, participants discuss investigative techniques used in criminal, counterintelligence, and terrorism investigations.

The curriculum follows traditional methods used at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia, but it is geared toward non-law enforcement participants. Special agents and other FBI experts make presentations, allowing for a free exchange of questions and observations.

Our classes run for eight straight weeks in the spring in Des Moines and in the fall in Omaha. Each class runs approximately three hours each night. Besides traditional classroom presentations, participants can view evidence recovery techniques used at crime scenes and try our Firearms Training Simulator, which allows participants to experience situations similar to those our agents face when confronting potentially dangerous suspects. Class members are also invited to participate in a session at a firearms range, where they watch a SWAT (Specialized Weapons and Tactics) team demonstration and have the chance to fire the same weapons used by our agents.

To participate in the Citizens Academy, you are required to:

  • Be at least 21 years of age;
  • Have no prior felony convictions;
  • Live and/or work within the Omaha Division’s jurisdiction; and
  • Pass a limited background investigation.

Citizens Academy graduates are eligible to become members of the FBI Citizens Academy Foundation of Omaha, which works with the FBI to promote a safer community through educational and service projects.

We also offer Citizens Academy alumni an opportunity to visit the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia for a unique tour and a series of briefings from its staff. Participants on this optional trip learn how our agents are trained, visit the FBI’s Forensics Laboratory, and see where our Hostage Rescue Team trains each day. They also attend a series of presentations at FBI Headquarters in Washington, D.C.
