OKLAHOMA CITY—Today, ERIC JOSEPH SCHWARTZ, 49, of North Hollywood, California, was charged with traveling from California to Oklahoma City for the purpose of engaging in a sexual act with an 8-year-old girl, announced Sanford C. Coats, United States Attorney for the Western District of Oklahoma.

According to the court documents, Schwartz, a high school English teacher in Sherman Oaks, California, became acquainted with an Oklahoma City-area woman in February 2010 through social networking website for individuals who are interested in unusual sexual experiences. Schwartz, using the screen name “SirTabu,” made contact with the woman who said she had an 8-year-old daughter. Schwartz and the woman began corresponding via instant messenger and telephone where Schwartz made plans to travel to Oklahoma City to engage in illicit sexual conduct with the girl. Unbeknownst to Schwartz, the woman was cooperating with the FBI, recording her communications with him, and the 8-year-old girl did not exist.

On March 29, 2010, Schwartz flew by airplane to Oklahoma City, where he was arrested by the FBI. Reference is made to the complaint and affidavit for further information.

The public is reminded that the complaint is merely an accusation and that the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

This case is a result of an investigation conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Brandon Hale.
