Two City Men Plead Guilty to Brandishing Firearms During Attempted Carjacking

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—Yesterday, MARCUS DEWAYNE OAKES, 20, and DELON ANTOIN BAKER, 33, both of Oklahoma City, each pled guilty for their role in a January 2007 attempted carjacking in Oklahoma City and for using a firearm in the process, announced John C. Richter, United States Attorney for the Western District of Oklahoma.

Oakes and Baker were indicted in March for a January 17, 2009, attempt to take a 2006 Dodge Charger parked at 1605 N.E. 18th Street in Oklahoma City. Oakes and Baker, each wearing masks, brandished semi-automatic handguns at the victims who were leaving a baby shower that had just ended at the residence. Oakes took the victim’s keys and other personal property by force, then entered the vehicle just as police sirens approached the area. Oakes and Baker fled on foot but were soon apprehended with the help of the Oklahoma City Police Department Air One Unit, Gang Task Force and K9 Officers who assisted in the search.

At sentencing, Oakes and Baker will each face a minimum of seven years in federal prison for the use of a firearm during an attempted carjacking, followed by term of supervised release for up to five years. Sentencing will be set by the Court in approximately 90 days.

This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Oklahoma City Police Department. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Leslie M. Maye and Lori Hines.
