Hampton Man Sentenced to 25 Years for Robbery in Hampton

NEWPORT NEWS, VA—Michael Jerome Parker, 30, of Hampton, Va., was sentenced yesterday to 308 months in prison for conspiracy to interfere with commerce by robbery and discharging a firearm in relation to a crime of violence.

Neil H. MacBride, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, made the announcement after sentencing by United States District Judge Rebecca Beach Smith. Parker pled guilty on November 30, 2010.

According to court documents, Parker admitted receiving a firearm from an associate for the purpose of committing a robbery of an individual who had arranged to supply Parker with crack cocaine. On March 12, 2010, in the course of the robbery in the parking lot of a Hampton condominium complex, Parker exchanged gun fire with the drug supplier. More than 25 shots were exchanged, some entering adjacent residences, and both Parker and the drug supplier were wounded. Forensic evidence tied Parker to the firearm used in the attempted robbery.

Other defendants involved in the robbery were also convicted in United States District Court. Samuel Hill, 25, of Hampton, pled guilty to conspiracy to interfere with commerce by robbery and felon in possession of a firearm, and was sentenced to 150 months. Jonathan C. Long, 26, of Hampton, pled guilty to possession of cocaine base and cocaine with intent to distribute and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, and was sentenced to 180 months.

The case was investigated by the Hampton Police Division Crimes Against Persons Unit and the FBI Violent Crimes Task Force. Special Assistant United States Attorney Timothy R. Murphy prosecuted these cases on behalf of the United States.
