Newport News Man Sentenced for Heroin Conspiracy

NEWPORT NEWS, VA—Joseph Vick, Jr. age 57, of Newport News, Virginia was sentenced today to 12 years in prison for his participation in a heroin ring that distributed heroin throughout the Virginia Peninsula. Neil H. MacBride, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, made the announcement after sentencing by United States District Judge Raymond A. Jackson.

According to court documents, leaders of the criminal organization obtained heroin in New York City which was transported to “Table Top” locations in the cities of Newport News and Hampton. These “Table Top” locations were used to store, cut, and package bulk heroin into glassine bags for distribution in the cities of Newport News, Hampton, Poquoson, and Williamsburg and in the counties of Gloucester, James City, Mathews, Middlesex, and York. Joseph Vick, Jr. served as a mid-level distributor for the organization, typically distributing 10 to 20 “bundles,” or ten-packs, of heroin per day.

This case was investigated by an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) led by the FBI’s Norfolk Division, and the investigative team that included the Newport News Police Department, the Virginia State Police, the Hampton Police Division, the Poquoson Police Department, the Department of Veterans Affairs Office the Inspector General, Criminal Investigations Division, and the United States Army, Criminal Investigations Division. Assistant United States Attorney Laura P. Tayman prosecuted the case on behalf of the United States.
