FBI New York November 18, 2009
  • FBI New York Press Office (212) 384-2100

Today, FBI New York Assistant Director-in-Charge (ADIC) Joseph Demarest and Special Agent in Charge Greg Fowler hosted Executive Associate Director (EAD) Klaus Wittling, Head of the State Security Division of the Bundeskriminalamt (BKA) and Deputy Head, Dr. Juliane Malzacher, Deputy of Islamic Extremist Branch of the German Federal Criminal Police. They were joined by Washington D.C. based BKA Liaison Office Representatives Mr. Steffen Russ and Mr. Patrick Schuh. The group toured FBI New York’s Joint Terrorism Task Force and was provided an overview of the JTTF by Supervisory Special Agent Niall Brennan.

ADIC Demarest and SAC Fowler discussed operations, training and overall organization with EAD Wittling and Deputy Malzacher.

The relationship between the FBI’s Legal Attaché in Berlin and the BKA is a critical asset in our joint battle against terrorism and international crime.

ADIC Demarest stated, “Many of our investigations into both counterterrorism and criminal matters have international links, and the best way to deter global crime in multiple jurisdictions is to work closely with our partners abroad. We have a time-honored relationship with our German colleagues and the people of Germany and we will continue to work together to fight crime and terrorism.”

SAC Fowler said, “Our operation is constantly improving.  Recent cases worked jointly with our German partners have been prime examples of our cooperation together and meetings like this assure that cooperation will continue in the future.”

BKA Head Wittling added, “We can only overcome the problems together. We have worked with the FBI frequently in Germany on numerous issues and it is always a great opportunity when we can renew our friendships at the FBI in New York.  I look forward to continued cooperation following these meetings and the important discussions of the day.”
