  • Southern District of New York (212) 637-2600

LEV L. DASSIN, the Acting United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, announced today that CURTIS QUINONES, a/k/a “Sha,” was found guilty on Friday, February 27, 2009, following a one-week trial before United States District Judge STEPHEN C. ROBINSON, of assault with intent to commit murder and assault with a dangerous weapon.

As established by the evidence at trial:

QUINONES was incarcerated at Federal Correctional Institution Otisville (“FCI Otisville”), a federal prison in Orange County. On the afternoon of December 30, 2007, while crossing the outdoor prison compound at FCI Otisville, QUINONES lunged and stabbed another inmate in the neck with a sharp shank.

QUINONES, who was searched by Correctional Officers immediately following the attack, was found wearing a body wrap as protection around his waist, and a towel covering and protecting his neck.

In the meantime, the victim was rushed by helicopter to Westchester Medical Center, where he was later stabilized.

QUINONES, 26, of the Bronx, New York, was found guilty of one count of assault with intent to commit murder, and one count of assault with a dangerous weapon. He faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for June 18, 2009.

Mr. DASSIN praised the work of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Special Investigations Section of FCI Otisville in connection with the investigation and prosecution, and thanked the entire staff of FCI Otisville for their assistance.

Assistant United States Attorney BENJAMIN ALLEE is in charge of the prosecution.
