Robert J. Garrity Named SAC in Denver

Robert J. Garrity has been named Special Agent in Charge (SAC) of the FBI’s Denver Field Office. Director Robert S. Mueller, III, appointed him to this position to replace former SAC Richard C. Powers. Most recently, Mr. Garrity served as the FBI’s Deputy Chief Information Officer and Business Process Reengineering Executive.

Mr. Garrity entered on duty as a special agent of the FBI in 1976. Upon completion of training at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia, he was assigned to the Savannah Field Office. In 1977, he was transferred to the Statesboro, Georgia, Resident Agency. In 1978, Mr. Garrity was transferred to the New York Field Office, where he was assigned to a foreign counterintelligence squad investigating the activities of the Soviet Military Intelligence (GRU). He was promoted in 1980 to supervisory special agent (SSA) and transferred to the former Intelligence Division at FBI Headquarters and assigned as an attorney to the Special Staff, the precursor to the National Security Law Unit.

In 1983, Mr. Garrity was reassigned as an SSA in the Soviet Section of the Intelligence Division, where he provided guidance, oversight, and support to offices conducting counterintelligence activities against the former Soviet Committee for State Security (KGB).

In 1984, Mr. Garrity was transferred back to the New York Field Office as the supervisor of a squad engaged in counterintelligence activities directed against the KGB. In 1989, he was promoted and transferred back to FBI Headquarters as the chief of the GRU and Arms Control Treaties Unit in the Intelligence Division. In 1992, Mr. Garrity returned to criminal investigative assignments and was designated the Special Assistant to the Assistant Director of the Criminal Investigative Division. In 1995, he was promoted to the position of Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the Dallas Field Office, where he was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the division.

In July 2000, Mr. Garrity was selected into the FBI’s Senior Executive Service at the rank of Inspector and assigned to the Office of Inspections. During this time, he served as the Inspector in Charge of the Information Security (InfoSec) Working Group, analyzing the FBI's InfoSec policies, practices, and procedures.

In July 2001, Mr. Garrity was appointed the FBI’s interim Records Officer and charged with the responsibility of assessing the FBI’s records management systems. Mr. Garrity subsequently served as Deputy Assistant Director of the new Records Management Division. From January 2003 through January 2004, he served as the acting Assistant Director of the Records Management Division.

From June 2004 to June 2005, Mr. Garrity served as the SAC of the Jackson Field Office. In June 2005, Mr. Garrity served was appointed the Deputy Chief Information Officer and Business Process Reengineering Executive of the FBI.

Mr. Garrity was born and raised in the Baltimore, Maryland, metropolitan area, where he received his early education. He graduated from the University of Maryland Baltimore County with a bachelor’s degree in psychology, the University of Baltimore School of Law, and earned a master’s of public administration from the University of Southern California.
