FBI Director Names Special Agent Chris Swecker Assistant Director for Criminal Investigative Division

Washington, DC – FBI Director Robert Mueller has named Chris Swecker to be Assistant Director (AD) for the Criminal Investigative Division (CID). Mr. Swecker most recently led the Charlotte, North Carolina field office as Special Agent in Charge from July 1999 through April 2004. In support of the FBI’s overarching priorities, the CID is responsible for coordinating, managing, and directing all criminal investigative programs nationwide. These investigations focus on financial, violent and organized crime; public corruption; violation of individual civil rights; corporate fraud; and drug related crimes.

Director Mueller said, “The AD for the Criminal Investigative Division will guide the investigative efforts of field offices against criminal enterprises in the continental United States, as well as internationally. It is crucial that the Bureau’s investigative procedures and programs be successful to prevail in the continued war on terror. I am confident that Chris’ knowledge and experience will prove a strong addition to our management team.”

Mr. Swecker has been with the FBI as a Special Agent since June 13, 1982, and has made contributions across the country. He served in the Charlotte, Oklahoma City, Miami, and Houston field offices. His varied experiences include acting as the on scene commander of the FBI operations in Iraq, the dismantlement of a Hizballah terror cell in Charlotte, and the investigation and capture of Eric Robert Rudolph. From his extensive work on criminal cases, including both national and international cases, to his experience as a Special Agent in Charge, Mr. Swecker has developed a unique understanding for the Criminal Investigative Division as well as the evolving mission of the FBI.

Mr. Swecker has degrees in Political Science and Economics from Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, and a Juris Doctor Degree from Wake Forest School of Law in Winston Salem, North Carolina. He began his career as an Assistant District Attorney in North Carolina. Mr. Swecker is married and has three daughters. He is a member of the North Carolina State Bar, Virginia State Bar – Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the U.S. Supreme Court.
