Washington, DC – FBI Director Robert S. Mueller, III, today announced the appointment of Joseph L. Ford to be Assistant Director (AD) for the Bureau’s Finance Division and Chief Financial Officer (CFO). Mr. Ford has served as Acting AD since April 2004.

As AD/CFO, Ford oversees the FBI’s $4.6 billion budget and a range of financial services including budget formulation and execution, accounting, and property management. He is responsible for ensuring that resources are allocated appropriately to areas of strategic importance, and in accordance with congressional appropriations.

Director Mueller said, “Through his work in the Finance Division, Joe has already helped us navigate through a realignment of our priorities and a period of substantial growth. I have tremendous confidence in his abilities. He is taking the helm of the Finance Division at a time when the pace of change will only accelerate, and he will play a pivotal role in ensuring that resources are allocated according to our priorities and in a manner that promotes efficiency and flexibility.”

After joining the FBI as a Special Agent in 1981, Ford investigated white collar crimes in San Antonio and public corruption and government program frauds in Philadelphia. In the 1990s, he managed a number of high-profile health fraud investigations, first as head of the health care fraud program at Headquarters, and later in the Tampa, Florida, field office. These included the national “GOLDPILL” investigation, and investigations into National Medical Enterprises and Columbia/HCA Healthcare.

In 2000, Ford returned to Headquarters to head the Economic Crimes Unit where he oversaw the FBI’s major investigative efforts related to securities and commodities fraud, insurance, telemarketing, and bankruptcy frauds. Following the attacks of September 11, 2001, he played an instrumental role in the development of financial evidence related to international terrorism. In Early 2002, Ford was named Inspector in Charge of the Enron investigation. He joined the Finance Division as Deputy Assistant Director and Deputy Chief Financial Officer in May 2003.

Ford holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the University of Baltimore.
