Ms. Ballew: One way law enforcement can address gang problems is through the FBI’s Violent Gang Safe Streets Task Forces.

Mr. Brunner: “The FBI stands up these Violent Gang Safe Streets Task Forces in coordination with our state and local partners.”

Ms. Ballew: Scott Brunner at FBI Headquarters says gangs are not just law enforcement problems.

Mr. Brunner: “We’re not gonna arrest our way out of this problem. We need the community’s support. We need the parenting support.”

Ms. Ballew: Education is important.

Mr. Brunner: “We need the education to the young individuals in their grade schools and middle schools letting them know that the gang life is not a safe way to go, and it brings a lot of problems to them and their families.”

Ms. Ballew: Success of the program depends upon the impact to the local community.

Mr. Brunner: “What have we done within the community to make it better for the citizens that are living there? Are the children able to go out and play on a playground, which they weren’t able to do before because of gang activity?”

Ms. Ballew: The FBI stood up the Safe Streets program in 1993. Now there are 167 violent gang task forces across the country. I’m Denise Ballew of the Bureau, and that’s what’s happening at the “FBI, This Week.”
