Mollie Halpern: The FBI is combating crime along the 2,000 miles of the nation’s Southwest border with a threat-focused and intelligence-driven approach.

Kevin Perkins: One of the things we are trying to do along the border involves what we’ve put out, we refer to as hybrid squads.

Halpern: I’m Mollie Halpern of the Bureau and you’re listening to “FBI, This Week”. The nine new squads include agents and our law enforcement partners with expertise in many types of crimes. Kevin Perkins, the assistant director of the Criminal Investigative Division…

Perkins: The end game is an ability to have a complete threat picture that’s based upon solid intelligence.

Halpern: …that way the Bureau and its partners can mitigate threats from the Southwest Border like drug trafficking, gang violence and human smuggling.

Perkins: Terrorists can potentially come through. It is definitely an area that we have a significant interest in, in the human trafficking end of things, so that we can protect the national security of the United States.
