Mollie Halpern: FBI preliminary statistics show the number of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty is on the rise. The numbers come as tens of thousands observe National Police Week.

I’m Mollie Halpern of the Bureau, and this is FBI, This Week. Seventy-two law enforcement officers across the country were killed in the line of duty in 2011. That’s 16 more than the year before. FBI Director Robert Mueller…

Director Robert Mueller, III: We must continue to seek ways to reduce the threats to our officers, our deputies, our troopers, and our agents.

Halpern: The FBI stands united with our law enforcement colleagues as we work together to protect America. We also pay tribute to the 55 special agents killed in the line of duty in the Bureau’s 103-year history.

Mueller: Each of these special agents knowingly faced danger, but they accepted the risk so that others could be safe. They did so with the utmost bravery.
