Mollie Halpern: As the FBI begins to increase its workforce, it will seek to hire those with the leadership qualities necessary to lead the national security and law enforcement organization into the future.

Nancy McNamara: To be a leader in the FBI, you need to possess a variety of skills. Obviously, subject matter expertise and understanding the duties and obligations of an FBI agent is critical.

Halpern: A leader must also motivate, says the FBI’s Nancy McNamara, who is the assistant director of the Inspection Division. The Bureau already has a tradition of hiring the best leaders. The inspection process is designed to further develop and implement leadership skills of both special agents and intelligence analysts. The process requires employees to evaluate threats and ensure the FBI mitigates them; it takes at least a year to complete.

McNamara: The Inspection Division ensures that FBI leadership is effectively addressing the FBI mission to protect the United States from terrorism and other crimes.
