Ms. Ballew: Bribery, kickbacks, wire and mail fraud...

Mr. Chadwick: “Sometimes just outright theft of government property. Early in the war effort, large amounts of cash were taken into these theaters to help stimulate economies. In a lot of instances, that money was just stolen.”

Ms. Ballew: Thomas Chadwick is chief of the FBI’s International Corruption Unit. The FBI started an International Contract Corruption Initiative to handle this type of crime.

Mr. Chadwick: “The impetus for that was the large amounts of money that were being spent on what it was at the time, called the global war on terrorism and the fraud and corruption that was involved in that war and reconstruction process.”

Ms. Ballew: He says that initiative led to a task force, now with nine federal agencies, to address corruption and fraud involved in the contracting effort abroad.

Mr. Chadwick: “The money that is spent overseas in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Kuwait to feed our troops, to get them fuel, to repair our airplanes, to build bases.”

Ms. Ballew: Over 100 individuals have been charged and close to $100 million has been claimed in these cases. I’m Denise Ballew of the Bureau and that’s what’s happening at the “FBI, This Week.”
