Director Robert S. Mueller, III: It is because of these strong relationships that we have dealt a devastating blow to transnational criminal enterprises, particularly the Mafia.

Mollie Halpern: I’m Mollie Halpern and this is FBI, This Week. Judge Giovanni Falcone of Italy cultivated the relationship between the FBI and the Italian Police when the two agencies worked parallel cases involving the Mafia. At the time—a quarter century ago—global law enforcement was not routine as it is today.

Mueller: He early on recognized that no one department or country could fight crime alone.

Halpern: Falcone was assassinated after he put more than 300 mafiosi behind bars. Former FBI Director Louis Freeh says Falcone’s legacy lives on 21 years later.

Louis Freeh: It’s a superb legacy because it has brought these two law enforcement establishments together stronger than ever.

Halpern: The FBI partners with law enforcement and intelligence/security services in more than 200 nations.
