Mr. Schiff: The FBI’s Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System, IAFIS, has 63 million subjects filed. Kim Delgreco is chief of the FBI’s Biometrics Services Section. She says a Florida cold case was about a murder of a man at his Sarasota home. Latent fingerprints were found, but at that time, IAFIS didn’t exist.

Ms. Delgreco: “This case in particular remained unsolved for about 30 years. But in 15 minutes, the offender was identified by IAFIS.”

Mr. Schiff: IAFIS is at the FBI’s Criminal Justice Information Services Division in West Virginia. Delgreco says the Sarasota Police Department’s persistence paid off.

Ms. Delgreco: “Detective Patrick Robinson, who realized the capabilities of forensic technology today and our IAFIS system , and Crime Scene Unit Supervisor Jocelyn Masten for her knowledge in preparing the latent print to obtain the identification.”

Mr. Schiff: Learn all about fingerprints at fbi.gov. I’m Neal Schiff of the Bureau and that’s what’s happening at the “FBI, This Week.”
