Mollie Halpern: The FBI says those infected with a computer virus called DNSChanger could lose Internet access beginning July 9.
Thomas Grasso: We estimate that there’s approximately 64,000 computers that are still affected by this in the United States.
Halpern: I’m Mollie Halpern of the Bureau, and this is FBI This Week. An alleged organized criminal enterprise called Rove Digital deployed the virus, which controlled computer users’ web browsing. The criminals profited from their actions by replacing legitimate advertising with their own advertising. Six of the members were arrested last year.
To make sure victims didn’t lose Internet service, the FBI worked with a non-profit organization to provide victims with a temporary solution. That solution expires on July 9. Supervisory Special Agent Thomas Grasso of the Cyber Division says he hopes…
Grasso: …that they follow our recommendations to: one, determine if they’re affected by this; and then two, fix the problem.
Halpern: To detect and fix the problem, visit www.DCWG.org. For a link to this website, visit www.fbi.gov, where you can also detect if your computer is infected.
