Mr. Schiff: A lot of us go to “social networking” sites on the Internet. In the FBI’s Cyber Division, the IC3, the Internet Crime Complaint Center investigates Internet crimes. Special Agent Leslie Hoppey supervises agents and analysts.

Ms. Hoppey: “A lot of the victims are reporting that their accounts have been hijacked.”

Mr. Schiff: Hoppey says one of the ways is with spam promoting phishing sites.

Ms. Hoppey: “On it, the phishing site is claiming that an issue has to be resolved on the social networking site, so these people innocently provide them with their user name and password.”

Mr. Schiff: Phishing is when innocent users of the Internet get an e-mail and are guided to a phony web site. Hoppey says you may wish to limit personal information you put on the Internet.

Ms. Hoppey: “Consider limiting this information to your family members or your close friends.”

Mr. Schiff: The Internet Crime Complaint Center, IC3.gov, is where you can report Internet crimes. I’m Neal Schiff of the Bureau, and that’s what’s happening at the “FBI, This Week.”
