President Barack Obama called FBI Director James Comey a “remarkable new leader” Monday during a formal installation ceremony at FBI Headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Comey, 52, a former prosecutor and deputy attorney general, officially took over as Director in early September at the conclusion of Robert S. Mueller’s term. At Monday’s ceremony, the president called Comey uniquely qualified for the role, which carries a 10-year term.

“What gave me confidence that this was the right man for the job wasn’t his degrees and it wasn’t his resume; it was in talking to him and seeing his amazing family, a sense that this is somebody who knows what’s right and what’s wrong, and is willing to act on that basis every single day,” Obama said.

Comey said the FBI’s motto, “Fidelity, Bravery, Integrity,” captures the essence of its employees, including hundreds who attended the event. “They also explain why I am here,” he said. “I wanted to be here to work alongside those people, to represent them, to help them accomplish their mission, and to just be their colleague.”

Comey called the Bureau’s men and women “the best of the best” and said he was proud to work beside them. “What makes the bravery of the men and women of the FBI so extraordinary is they know the danger they will confront and they raise their right hands and take an oath to do the job anyway,” Comey said.
