Preliminary Six-Month Crime Stats for 2013 Released

Today, the FBI released preliminary crime statistics that indicate a decrease of 5.4 percent in the number of violent crimes and property crimes reported to law enforcement during the first six months of 2013 when compared to crimes reported during the same time frame in 2012.

In the violent crime category, forcible rape was down 10.6 percent, murder was down 6.9 percent, aggravated assault decreased 6.6 percent, and robbery was down 1.8 percent. In the property crime category, burglary decreased 8.1 percent, larceny-theft was down 4.7 percent, and motor vehicle theft decreased 3.2 percent. Reported arson offenses—collected separately from other property crimes in the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program—saw a decrease of 15.6 percent.

This preliminary report contains four tables of information; the first three cover percent changes in specific violent crime and property crime offenses that are grouped by 1) population, 2) region of the country, and 3) consecutive years. Table 4—which contains the number of reported offenses—groups the data by state and city with populations of 100,000 or more.

While the UCR Program initiated collection of data under a broader definition for rape in January 2013, only data collected under the original definition of forcible rape is published in Tables 1-3. However, all rape data—whether submitted under the original definition or the new definition—are presented in Table 4 (agencies that reported under the new definition are referenced with a footnote).

The full Crime in the United States, 2013 report will be released towards the end of this year.
