Today, Attorney General Eric Holder paid tribute to outgoing FBI Director Robert S. Mueller at a ceremony at the Department of Justice attended by his former and current colleagues in government, family members, and others.

At the event, the Director was presented with the Attorney General’s Award for Exceptional Service, the Justice Department’s highest honor.

“During his time as FBI Director, Bob has served as a key adviser to two presidents, a critical member of this country’s national security team—and an indispensable partner to me,” Holder said. “In the years since the September 11th attacks—which occurred just one week into his tenure—he has led nothing less than a large-scale, historic transformation of the Bureau. ... He has, in short, set the standard for what it means to be the Director of the FBI—positioning the Bureau to deal with 21st century threats without losing sight of its traditional law enforcement missions."

After accepting the award, Director Mueller reflected on his path. "I have spent the better part of my careerI would say the best part of my careerwith the Department of Justice and the FBI," he said. "I have always been proud to say that I work for the Department of Justice because of that for which it stands—which is an unyielding commitment to the rule of law, and to the safety and the security of the citizens we serve. But I have also been honored to work with the individuals who have given the Justice Department its legacy and its lasting impact. ... Men and women who give everything in their power to keep the American people safe. Men and women for whom the rule of law is the guiding principle."
