Former Independence Police Chief Sentenced in Federal Court

U.S. Attorney’s Office July 16, 2010
  • Eastern District of Louisiana (504) 680-3000

NEW ORLEANS—ANTHONY P. MAURER, age 60 a resident of Independence, Louisiana, was sentenced yesterday in federal court by Honorable Magistrate Alma L. Chasez to serve two (2) years’ probation with 300 hours of community service, announced U.S. Attorney Jim Letten.

According to court documents, MAURER pled guilty on March 15, 2010, admitted that he caused two of his deputies to provide false information on their voter registration forms indicating that they lived in the voting district when, in fact, they did not. The purpose of the false voter registration was to enable the deputies to vote in the February 2, 2008, election. Their ineligible votes in that election deprived the voters of Tangipahoa Parish of their right to an undiluted election.

U.S. Attorney Letten and FBI Special Agent in Charge David Welker, as well as the investigative and prosecution team, offer their thanks to Rafael Goyeneche and the Metropolitan Crime Commission for providing valuable assistance in this successful case.

The case was investigated by agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Irene González.
