Child Pornography Charges Filed Against Gray Man for Second Time

U.S. Attorney’s Office April 30, 2009
  • Eastern District of Louisiana (504) 680-3000

JASON APPELDORN, 33, of Gray, Louisiana, was charged yesterday in a Bill of Information for possession of child pornography, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten.

According to court documents, APPELDORN was arrested on March 5, 2009, by agents from the U. S. Department of Homeland Security, Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and officers from U. S. Probation. According to the Bill of Information filed in this case, on March 5, 2009, federal law enforcement officers found APPELDORN in possession of a mobile memory card that contained images of child pornography. The defendant was remanded to the custody of the U. S. Marshal pending trial.

Because APPELDORN was previously convicted of Possession of Child Pornography on March 16, 2005, he faces an enhanced maximum penalty of twenty (20) years with a mandatory minimum of ten (10) years imprisonment, followed by up to a lifetime term of supervised release, a $250,000.00 fine and APPELDORN can be required to register as a sex offender if convicted

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006, by the Department of Justice. Led by United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS), Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims. U. S. Attorney Letten reiterated that the Bill of Information is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

This case is being investigated jointly by special agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U. S. Department of Homeland Security, ICE. The prosecution of this case is being handled by Project Safe Childhood Coordinator, Assistant U. S. Attorney Brian M. Klebba.
