Federal Grand Jury Indicts Man for Bank Robbery

MICHAEL NELSON, a/k/a MICHEAL NELSON, a/k/a MICHALL NELSON, a/k/a RED NELSON, age 45 and a resident of New Orleans, Louisiana, was charged today in a one count indictment by a Federal grand jury with bank robbery, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten.

The indictment alleges that NELSON robbed the Whitney Bank located in LaPlace, Louisiana on Thursday, April 9, 2009 of an undisclosed sum of United States currency. If convicted, NELSON faces a maximum term of imprisonment of twenty (20) years, a fine of $250,000.00, and three (3) years of supervised release following any term of imprisonment.

U. S. Attorney Letten reiterated that the indictment is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and is being prosecuted by Assistant U. S. Attorney Edward J. Rivera of the Violent Crime Unit.
