New Haven Man Sentenced to 10 Years in Federal Prison for Drug, Gun Offenses

David B. Fein, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that ANDRE WHITFIELD, 31, of New Haven, was sentenced today by United States District Judge Christopher F. Droney in Hartford to 120 months of imprisonment, followed by five years of supervised release.

According to court documents and statements made in court, in March 2007, WHITFIELD was arrested in the vicinity of 880 Grand Avenue in New Haven after he was found in possession of approximately 134 grams of crack cocaine, a quantity of marijuana, and a loaded .380 caliber semiautomatic pistol. On November 5, 2007, WHITFIELD pleaded guilty to one count of possession with intent to distribute cocaine base (“crack cocaine”) and one count of possession of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking.

In June 2009, while he was released on bond pending sentencing, WHITFIELD sold a .44-magnum caliber revolver with three rounds of ammunition to an individual working with law enforcement. WHITFIELD was arrested again on July 2, 2009. and, on August 4, 2009, he pleaded guilty to one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

WHITFIELD has been detained since July 2, 2009.

This matter was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the Branford Police Department, and the New Haven Police Department. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Edward Chang.

The Project Safe Neighborhoods Initiative is aimed at reducing gun and gang violence, deterring illegal possession of guns, and improving the safety of residents of Connecticut’s cities. Participants in the initiative include community members and organizations as well as federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.
