New Haven Man Pleads Guilty to Federal Crack Cocaine Distribution Charge

Nora R. Dannehy, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that JUAN BURNEY, 34, of New Haven, pleaded guilty today before United States District Judge Stefan R. Underhill in Bridgeport to one count of possession with intent to distribute five grams or more of cocaine base (“crack cocaine”).

According to documents filed with the Court and statements made in court, on February 24, 2009, BURNEY possessed 33 individual bags containing crack cocaine, which were hidden in his automobile. On the same date, BURNEY possessed 132 individual bags containing crack cocaine that were stored in his storage facility unit in West Haven. The total weight of cocaine base contained in all the bags that BURNEY possessed was approximately 42 grams.

Judge Underhill has scheduled sentencing for November 23, 2009 at which time BURNEY faces a maximum term of imprisonment of 40 years and a fine of up to $2 million.

This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Sarah P. Karwan.
