Wantage, New Jersey Man Pleads Guilty to Two Counts of Bank Robbery

NEWARK, NJ—William R. Carberry, Jr. pleaded guilty today to robbing TD Bank in Jersey City, N.J. on June 25, 2010, and attempting to rob Chase Bank in Franklin, N.J. on June 28, 2010, U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman announced.
Carberry, 31, of Wantage, New Jersey, pleaded guilty to an information charging him with one count of bank robbery and one count of attempted bank robbery before United States District Judge Stanley R. Chesler in Newark federal court.
According to the criminal complaint filed in Newark federal court in August 2010:
On June 25, 2010, Carberry entered a TD Bank in Jersey City and told a bank teller that he had a gun in his bag and to give him the money in the bank teller’s drawer. The bank teller handed him approximately $578.
On June 28, 2010, Carberry entered a Chase Bank in Franklin and passed a bank teller a note stating that he had a gun and demanding money. Before the bank teller handed him any money, Carberry retrieved the note and fled.
Each charge carries a maximum statutory penalty of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine or twice the gain or loss from the offense. Sentencing is scheduled for July 27, 2011.
U.S. Attorney Fishman credited special agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Michael B. Ward in Newark, with the investigation that resulted in today’s guilty plea.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Amy Luria and Fabiana Pierre-Louis of the Criminal Division in Newark.
