  • District of New Jersey (973) 645-2888

NEWARK, NJ—A West New York, N.J., man was arrested this morning in Clifton, N.J., for stealing a frequency generator from an engineering company which provides mission critical products to the U.S. military and selling it through eBay, United States Attorney Paul J. Fishman announced.

Vincent J. Corey, 38, is charged by Complaint with one count each of interstate transportation and transmission of stolen property, and sale of stolen property. He is expected to appear this afternoon before United States Magistrate Judge Madeline Cox Arleo in Newark federal court.

According to the Complaint:

At the time of the theft, Corey was a staff engineer for ITT Corporation, an engineering and manufacturing company that, among other things, provides products and services that support the United States military and its allies.

Corey used his Department of Defense security clearance to access a secured area of ITT in order to steal a generator with military applications valued at approximately $50,000. This type of generator is used as a tester in the manufacturing process of other items to mimic radio frequencies of surface-to-air missiles. In July 2010, Corey used a fictitious name to offer the generator to another company through its eBay account and to negotiate the terms of sale. Using the fake identity, Corey sold the stolen generator for $20,000.

If convicted of the charges, Corey faces a maximum potential penalty of 10 years in prison and a maximum fine of $250,000 on each charge.

U.S. Attorney Fishman credited special agents with the FBI, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Michael B. Ward, and the Clifton Police Department with the investigation leading to today’s arrest and charges.

The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Joyce M. Malliet of the U.S. Attorney’s Office National Security Unit in Newark.

The charges and allegations contained in the Complaint are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
