NEWARK, NJ—Two Newark, NJ men appeared this afternoon before United States Magistrate Judge Patty Shwartz on charges related to the gunpoint robbery of an PNC Bank in Whippany, United States Attorney Paul J. Fishman announced.

Nathaniel Barreto, 28, and Juan Perez, 20, both of Newark, were arrested Tuesday by agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and officers of the Hanover Township Police Department, Morris County Sheriff’s Office, and New Jersey State Police. Judge Shwartz ordered Berreto detained; Perez was released on a $125,000 bond with electronic monitoring.

According to the Complaint filed in this case and statements made in court:

On August 17, 2010, Barreto entered a PNC bank in Whippany, NJ wearing a black stocking mask, clothing, and gloves, and carrying a handgun and a plastic bag. After two tellers turned over money Barreto demanded at gunpoint, he fled the bank with approximately $4,527.

A witness saw Barreto get into a green Acura driven by Perez and noted the license plate, which matched that of a car abandoned near a wooded area. Perez and Barreto were both found in the woods.

If convicted of the bank robbery charge, the defendants each face a maximum potential penalty of 20 years in prison and a maximum fine of $250,000.

U.S. Attorney Fishman credited the FBI, under the direction of Michael B. Ward in Newark, along with the Hanover Township Police Department, the Morris County Sheriff’s Office, The New Jersey State Police, and the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office for the work leading to the identification and apprehension of the defendant.

This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Sam Stern of the U.S. Attorney’s Office Criminal Division in Newark.

The charges and allegations contained in the Complaint are merely accusations and the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
