FBI Searching for Armed Men from Takeover Bank Robbery

FBI Newark February 23, 2010
  • Special Agent Michael Whitaker (973) 792-3020

NEWARK, NJ—Acting Special Agent In Charge Kevin Cruise announced today that the FBI is looking for two men who carried out a brazen takeover-style armed robbery of the Beneficial Bank located at 3002 Route 130 in Delran, New Jersey shortly after 10 a.m. today.

According to the bank surveillance video, the men wore black hoods and gloves when they entered the bank at approximately 10:06 a.m. One robber, dressed in a neon green sweatshirt with an eagle with spread wings appearing on the front and grey sweatpants, vaulted over the teller counter. That man was wearing what appears to be weightlifting gloves which are described as black on top with gray on the palm side. He also carried what appeared to be a dark bag or sack in his left hand. He is described as 6’1”, 215-250 lbs.

The other robber, dressed in a red sweatshirt or jacket and black pants, stayed in the customer area of the bank. He is described as 5’11”, 190 lbs. That robber had two handguns: a silver colored one in his right hand and a black semiautomatic one in his left hand, which he pointed in the direction of the teller counter while wrapping his arms around another bank employee. From the surveillance video, he appeared to have forced the employee to the counter where he was seen holding cash. No weapons were actually fired and no one was injured.

The men escaped in a stolen 2000 silver Buick LeSabre, which was later recovered by law enforcement at the Tenby Chase Apartment complex, located at 193 Tenby Chase Road, in Delran, New Jersey—approximately one mile from the robbery. The vehicle had no visible damage before or after the robbery and is unremarkable in its appearance; that is, it had stock rims, no bumper stickers, or nothing that would make it stand out. Photos of the robbery and escape are below.

Law enforcement has learned that the car the robbers used to escape was stolen at 1:40 a.m. on February 22, 2010 from a 7-11 parking lot located at 5231 Harbinson Avenue at the intersection with Torresdale Avenue in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The owner and his four friends left the car running while they went inside the store. One individual was seen entering the vehicle and driving away from that location. Law enforcement has not yet determined if one of the men who robbed the Beneficial bank also stole the car at the 7-11 in Philadelphia. That vehicle will be processed for forensic evidence by the FBI’s Evidence Response Team.

The investigation is being worked by the Newark and Philadelphia offices of the FBI, as well as the Delran, NJ and Philadelphia, PA police departments. This case will be prosecuted in the federal system in the District of New Jersey. If convicted, the subjects will each face a potential prison sentence of up to 25 years for the bank robbery.

Anyone with information about the bank robbery or the stolen Buick LeSabre is encouraged to contact the FBI. In New Jersey, contact the FBI at 973-792-3000. In Philadelphia, contact the FBI at (215) 418-4000. Citizens should not attempt to apprehend this suspect or any fugitive on their own. In an emergency, citizens should call 911. The FBI provides rewards for information leading to the successful capture and prosecution of its fugitives.
