St. Francis Man Sentenced for Possession and Distribution of Meth

United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a St. Francis man charged with conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute a controlled substance was sentenced on August 4, 2011, by United States District Judge Roberto A. Lange. Dale Haukaas, age 30, was sentenced to 48 months in custody, three years of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment to the Victim Assistance Fund.
Haukaas was indicted for conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute a controlled substance by a federal grand jury on March 8, 2011. Haukaas served as a middle man for two individuals from Nebraska who were transporting methamphetamine to the Rosebud Reservation for resale. After the Nebraskans brought the methamphetamine to South Dakota, they would provide it to Haukaas, who would re-distribute the methamphetamine to his contacts in the St. Francis area. The drug quantity attributable to Haukaas based on his role in the conspiracy is between 50 and 200 grams of methamphetamine. He pled guilty to the indictment on May 9, 2011.
This case was investigated by the Northern Plains Safe Trails Drug Enforcement Task Force. Assistant United States Attorney Jay Miller prosecuted the case.
Haukaas was immediately turned over to the custody of the United States Marshal to begin serving his sentence.
