Rapid City Man Sentenced to 51 Months’ Custody for Possession of a Stolen Firearm

United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a Rapid City, South Dakota, man charged with possession of a stolen firearm was sentenced on June 20, 2011, by United States District Judge Roberto A. Lange. Wayne C. Richards, age 19, was sentenced to 51 months in custody, three years of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment to the Victim Assistance Fund.

Richards was indicted by a federal grand jury on January 19, 2011. Sometime between November 24, 2010, and January 12, 2011, Richards was in knowing possession of a stolen Smith & Wesson Model 649, .357 magnum caliber revolver. Richards pled guilty to the charge on March 28, 2011.

This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Rosebud Law Enforcement Services, South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Assistant United States Attorney Marie H. Ruettgers prosecuted the case.

Richards was immediately turned over to the custody of the United States Marshal.
