Cannonball Man Sentenced for Assault with a Dangerous Weapon

BISMARCK, ND—United States Attorney Timothy Q. Purdon announced that on April 7, 2011, Joel C. Gohl, 35, of Cannonball, North Dakota, was sentenced by United States District Court Judge Patrick A. Conmy on a charge of assault with a dangerous weapon. Gohl pleaded guilty to the charge on December 1, 2010.

Judge Conmy sentenced Gohl to two years and nine months in federal prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release. Gohl was ordered to pay restitution of $46,280.27 and to pay a $100 special assessment to the Crime Victim’s Fund.

On February 16, 2010, Gohl and the victim were together consuming alcoholic beverages at Gohl’s home in Cannonball. When Gohl and the victim began to argue, Gohl requested the victim leave the residence. The victim did not comply and swung at Gohl. Gohl then stabbed the victim in the chest with a knife.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Bureau of Indian Affairs - Standing Rock Agency.

Assistant United States Attorney Rick Volk prosecuted the case.
