Lakota Woman Sentenced for Distribution of a Controlled Substance Within 270 Feet of a School

FARGO—United States Attorney Timothy Q. Purdon announced that on March 28, 2011, Camilla Peltier, of Lakota, North Dakota, was sentenced before United States District Court Judge Ralph R. Erickson on charges of distribution of a controlled substance and distribution of a controlled substance in or near a school. Peltier pleaded guilty to the charges on January 11, 2011.

Judge Erickson sentenced Peltier to three years’ probation, with the first six months to be served as home confinement. Peltier was ordered to pay a $200 special assessment to the Crime Victim’s Fund.

On June 19, 2010, within 270 feet of an elementary school in Devils Lake, North Dakota, Peltier sold nine hydrocodone pills to an individual for $60. On July 21, 2010, on the Spirit Lake Indian Reservation, Peltier sold 20 hydrocodone pills to an individual for $200. Hydrocodone is a Schedule II controlled substance used to treat pain, as prescribed by a doctor.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation, and Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Assistant United States Attorney Janice M. Morley prosecuted the case.
