Eagle Butte Man Pleads Guilty to Assaulting, Resisting, or Impeding a Federal Officer

U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that Cory Ray Crazy Bull, age 18, of Eagle Butte, appeared before U.S. District Judge Charles B. Kornmann on July 25, 2011, and pled guilty to a superseding information that charged him with assaulting, resisting, or impeding a federal officer. The maximum penalty upon conviction is one year of imprisonment.

The charge stems from an incident in April 2011 when Crazy Bull was sentenced on a previous case. Upon sentencing, the defendant became visibly upset, and as he was being escorted from the courtroom by U.S. Marshal Steve Houghtalling, he began to resist and pull away, flailing his body and kicking his legs. Crazy Bull’s actions involved a simple assault on Stephen Houghtalling.

The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Randolph J. Seiler.

A presentence investigation was ordered, and a sentencing date was set for August 8, 2011. The defendant was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal pending sentencing.
