South Dakota Man Pleads Guilty to Sexually Abusing Child

United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that Monty Craig Green Leaf, age 22, of McLaughlin, appeared before United States District Judge Charles B. Kornmann on November 22, 2010, and pled guilty to a superseding information that charged him with sexual contact with a child by the use of force. The maximum penalty upon conviction is 20 years in custody, a $250,000 fine, or both; up to life of supervised release; and a $100 special assessment.

The charges relate to an incident that occurred near Little Eagle, South Dakota, between December 2009 and January 2010, where the defendant had sexual contact with a female child who was under the age of 12.

The investigation was conducted by Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Standing Rock Agency. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Mikal Hanson.

A presentence investigation was ordered, and a sentencing date was set for February 28, 2011. The defendant was remanded to the custody of the United States Marshal pending sentencing.
