Robbinsdale Man Sentenced for Distributing Ecstasy

U.S. Attorney’s Office July 28, 2010
  • District of Minnesota (612) 664-5600

A 28-year-old Robbinsdale man was sentenced earlier today in federal court in Minneapolis for distributing 4,000 tablets of the semisynthetic psychedelic drug MDMA, commonly known as ecstasy. United States District Court Judge Joan N. Ericksen sentenced Thongsay Prommachai to 48 months in prison on one count of distribution of ecstasy. He was indicted on November 10, 2009, and pleaded guilty on January 26, 2010.

In his plea agreement, Prommachai admitted that on October 15, 2009, he distributed the ecstasy tablets, which totaled 1,000 grams. A Federal Bureau of Investigation affidavit stated that in October 2009, agents learned Prommachai was selling ecstasy. As a result, they arranged for a controlled buy of the drug from him. That transaction occurred on October 15, in the parking lot of a Cub Foods store in Crystal. There, authorities observed Prommachai exit his vehicle and get into another one, where he handed the person inside a bag containing the ecstasy. At that point, authorities moved in and arrested him.

This case was the result of an investigation by the FBI and the St. Paul Police Department. It was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Christian S. Wilton.
