  • District of South Dakota (605) 330-4400

U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a man has been indicted by a federal grand jury for sexual abuse of a minor and tampering with evidence. Justin Honea, age 19, of Box Elder, was indicted by a federal grand jury for sexual abuse of a minor and tampering with evidence. He appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Veronica L. Duffy and pled not guilty to the indictment. The maximum penalty upon conviction is 15 years of imprisonment and a mandatory minimum term of five years to life for the charge of sexual abuse of a minor, and 20 years of imprisonment and three years of supervised release for the charge of tampering with evidence. The charges are merely accusations, and Honea is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Meade County Sheriff’s Office, and the Box Elder Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Gregg S. Peterman is prosecuting the case. On May 24, 2010, Honea was released on bond pending trial. A trial date has been set for July 27, 2010.
